We paid our tributes to Gray Helliwell, Life Member of the band, on Friday 18 November. Gray made a significant contribution to pipe bands over his life. Starting out as a pupil of Don Sargent in Dannevirke he played the Dannevirke High School band, the Ruahine PB and the Waipawa PB before moving to Napier in 1969. As tutor of the Napier Boys High School band and Pipe Major of the City of Napier PB’s #2 band he played a big part in the lives of the many people he tutored over many years. He was awarded a Life Membership of the band in 2016 in recognition of the enormous contribution he made to our bands here in Napier. Gray was a dedicated, loyal and reliable member of the band who willingly shared his knowledge and his piping talents with everyone. “Going Home” from his last parade.

The Band will be playing on Sunday 20 November for Napier’s Downtown Festival. Mayor Bill Dalton is cutting the ribbon for the opening at 11am and the Band will then play, starting from the corner of Tennyson St and marching up to the Browning St end, to entertain the public.
Sunday 9 October the band’s youngsters and learners, the All Stars, staged their second recital of the year. Here are some photos.

After three days of working together the All Stars performed in Napier at lunch time today. They played Amazing Grace and then some 2/4 marches before heading off for lunch. Its good to be working with such a bunch of keen and capable young people. Thanks also to the senior members who put in a lot of time and effort to helping our learners and youngsters

In October we’re holding our second workshop and look forward to providing some individual and group tuition for our members. On Thursday 6 Oct we’ll be playing in central Napier during lunchtime to give everyone a chance to put their skills to good use and to entertain the public, while the recital on Sunday 9th will be another chance for the pipers and drummers to perform.
