January Music

Here is the proposed list of tunes for the Art Deco concert which should all be familiar. Richard has attempted to add some variation from the tunes played in the previous concert. Whether the concert goes ahead will depend on the traffic light level that the country is in and whether Omicron is in the community.

March on- Scotland the Brave bracket. I would envisage that the drummers would already be at the front.
Wings/76 Police Tattoo/Children’s Song
Caller Herrin bracket with intro-piper playing first measure and band coming in for 2nd.
Swing of the Kilt with intro
Learner’s bracket-? Edith Cavell/Scots Wha Hae
? Dawning of the Day/La Boum with intro or ? Green Hills bracket.
Mike Metcalf/RAF 100
2nd Half-100 Pipers bracket with intro. Again with pipers marching in and drummers already at the front.
Bells of Dunblane
Love Song for Deborah Ann
Flower of Scotland
Highland Cathedral
Amazing Grace
Encore-Scotland the Brave-again

Monday practices resume Oct 4

We are resuming practices at the hall as from Monday 4 October. Being at Level 2 means that there are certain conditions we need to adhere to:

  • Members will need to sign the register which will be situated in the main hall. This is in addition to scanning the QR code as we need to be absolutely sure that we are aware of all who attend practice.
  • All entry to the hall needs to be through the main entrance. This will include drummers who will need to sign the register and then make their way to their room.
  • Indoor practice will be for practice chanter only. Hopefully the weather will be favourable enough to play pipes outside.
  • Due to the need to keep appropriate distancing, it will not be possible for both drummers and pipers to be in the main hall together. There will not be enough room.
  • To be able to attend practice, it will be a requirement that members have had at least their first vaccination shot.
  • Do not come to practice if you have any symptoms suggestive of Covid infection or of a respiratory nature including a cold/flu.
  • The Exec are aware that despite these conditions, some members may still feel uncomfortable about attending practice in the hall. We appreciate this and fully understand if you would prefer not to attend.

You are welcome to contact a member of the exec to discuss this further if you have any concerns.

Band AGM Awards

At the Band’s AGM Neville Lumb was awarded a Life Membership for his significant contribution to pipe bands in Napier over many years. In making the presentation, President Julie, noted that Neville has played with Napier’s pipe bands as a piper and bass drummer for many years, served on the Band’s committee, and assisted with the organisation here in HB of three national pipe band contests along with several centre contests.

Neville regularly attends practices and parades, and is always willing to help with Band activities whether it be fund raising, organising events or working on the band hall (he renovated the bar area and turned it into a very useful room). He is now managing the parade calendar and has recently taken on the role of H&S Officer. Neville was also for many years the Hastings Highland Games convenor which reflects his passion for the Scottish heritage and his willingness to contribute his organising expertise.

This nomination records our gratitude for Neville’s very positive and constructive contribution to pipe banding in Napier over many years.

Here is President Julie with new Life Member Neville and Neal Cobley, who was awarded the band’s drumming cup last night.

Dave Mitchell 1933-2021

Today we said farewell to one of the Band’s staunchest member, Dave Mitchell.
Dave Mitchellx
Dave played with a number of bands including the Scottish Society in Christchurch, and here in the Bay with the Port Ahuriri, the HB Scottish and with the City of Napier pipe bands.

He held many positions in Napier’s pipe bands including Pipe Sergeant, Custodian and President, and he and Val were made life members of the Band in recognition of the great contribution they made to the band over so many years.

When we think about Dave Mitchell the list of adjectives includes approachable, hard working, helpful, reliable, supportive, cheerful and kind.

We have been privileged to have known Dave and to have been helped and supported by him, something we will always remember.
